Applied Social Studies
[5M2181] FETAC Level 5
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This one-year course will prepare participants for work with people in a social care, community development or residential setting. The care worker needs social, communication and caring skills to work with individuals and groups. Many of the skills acquired will be transferable for use with adolescents, families and the elderly in a caring, educational or development role. The Applied Social Studies FETAC course will lay a foundation for these skills and provide the work experience to put learning into practice.
This course will serve as training for social care/community care/healthcare industries or as a link to Applied Social Studies/Social Care certificates or degree courses in many IT colleges throughout the country. This programme is ideal for both school leavers and experienced mature persons seeking a formal education.
COURSE DURATION
One year full time (9.00am – 3.40pm)
Mid September – Mid May

First Aid Certification
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Leaving Certificate standard or LCA. Mature candidates are welcome and experience will be considered in lieu of the Leaving Certificate. Allocation of places is by interview.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Course participants gain a better understanding of work roles and the reality of work through out-of-college work experience. This is an essential element of the course.

Graduates may seek employment in a range of Community Care, Healthcare and Community Development centres/initiatives.
PROGRESSION
Graduates may pursue a certificate or degree course in many of the IT colleges or universities around the country. There are now a large range of Social Studies or Community care certificate and degree courses available to graduates on the newly expanded FETAC links programme.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This certificate course provides students with key computer and office administration skills and is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in any office environment. Killarney Community College has decades of experience in the provision of Post Leaving Certificate Courses.Our well established reputation guarantees that a high percentage of our students find positions in permanent employment as a result of completing this course.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Successful students from this course will be fully qualified to take up employment in any modern office environment. Students will be competent to apply for administrative positions in the following sectors: Local Authority Offices, Banks, Health Boards, Civil Service, Tourism Offices, Hotel Industry, Retail, and General Offices.
PROGRESSION
Students who achieve a FETAC Level 5 Business Studies Secretarial Certificate with three distinctions and Component Certificates in all three Level 6 modules, are eligible to be considered for a place in Year 2 of the Higher Certificate in Business in Office Information Systems at the Institute of Technology, Tralee.
Alternatively, holders of a FETAC Level 5 Business Studies Secretarial Certificate may apply for year 1 of Diploma/Degree courses under the Higher Education Links Scheme.
